The Derwent sailing season, explained
Sydney-to-Hobart week, Wednesday twilight races and how to watch the fleet finish from our pier with a glass in hand.
The season's rhythm
From October to April the Derwent is a working theatre — Wednesday twilight races, weekend regattas and the constant background traffic of the fishing fleet. Our pier sits on the finish line of most of it.
Guests don't need to sail to enjoy the season; they need a deck chair, a drink and someone who can explain why everyone is shouting.
Race week
The Sydney-to-Hobart fleet arrives from December 28th onward — the harbour fills with maxis and the city leans into a week of celebration that peaks on New Year's Eve with fireworks off the barges.
Our pier and the revolving floor are the two best seats in the city for the finish. The estate's NYE package exists precisely because of this view.
The finish line is a hundred metres of water and the entire city holding its breath.

Watching it properly
Ask the desk for the race card — we keep the season's fixtures and can tell you which Wednesday the local fleet turns competitive. Twilight races finish against the mountain, which is the photograph.
If you want to be on the water rather than beside it, the tender can shadow a twilight race at a respectful distance — champagne aboard, race commentary optional.
The practical version
Season: October–April. Best viewing: the pier bar from 17:30 Wednesdays. Peak event: fleet finish, 28–31 December.
Tender race-shadowing is bookable through experiences — dress warmer than you think.
